Linoleum Flooring (Sheet Goods)
Linoleum has been a mainstay floor covering for over 100 years because it is one of the few products made from primarily natural raw materials. It is made of linseed oil, rosins, and wood and cork flour, all calendered onto a natural jute backing.
It is a tough yet visually striking floor covering, highly resistant to foot traffic. Because linoleum is an organic product, its performance is enhanced by time, as exposure to air serves to harden and increase its durability, while remaining quiet and comfortable under foot.
Linoleum is ideal for your floor:
- Quiet, anti-static
- Anti-microbial; no dust mites or allergens!
- Stain and water-resistant
- Can be used in any room, including kitchens and baths
- Your floor is likely to last 100 years!
What’s in it? Where’s it from?
Linseed oil, the main ingredient in linoleum, is produced from the flax plant. Also the source of linen, flax is easy to cultivate and in abundant supply.
The wood flour is obtained by controlled forestry, including the planting of special forests in Europe. No tropical hardwoods are ever used.
Pine rosin is mixed with the oxidized linseed oil to produce a flexible binder. This rosin is obtained without disturbing the tree’s growth.
The backing used for linoleum is made from spun jute fiber, grown primarily in India and Bangladesh, providing real economic contributions to these developing countries. Jute is a renewable resource.

We recommend cleaning Marmoleum 'dry'. Dust wiping is the most effective and efficient method of removing loose dirt. If there are stains, spot-treatment is sufficient.
Marmoleum has bacteriostatic properties, which are confirmed by famous laboratories such as TNO (The Netherlands) and NAMSA (USA), even against the bacteria MRSA.
Healthy Properties
| |
| Marmoleum® has no adverse health issues whatsoever, either during production, their useful lives, or disposal. Marmoleum is the "natural" choice when health concerns are involved. For this reason it is broadly applied in many hospitals, as well as being recommended by medical professionals to people with respiratory disorders.
Bactericidal Properties – Micro-organisms The bactericidal properties of linoleum prevent micro-organisms including Salmonella Typhimurium and Staphylococcus Aureus from multyplying themselves. The bactericidal properties of Marmoleum have been independently tested by both the TNO (Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research) and NAMSA (U.S.), both respected scientific institutes.
Further testing carried out recently by TNO (August 1998) demonstrated that Marmoleum has the same bactericidal properties against MRSA (Methiciline Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus). MRSA is antibiotic resistant and infections caused by this notorious hospital bacterium are very difficult to treat.
Prevention of Household Mites The number of people suffering from allergic reactions due to the presence of household dust mites is continually increasing. The presence of these mites is one of the major causes of allergy, asthma, and other respiratory disorders. The best solution is to avoid dust. Non-textile floor coverings help to reduce the accumulation of dust and dirt.
Keeping the floor free of dust is essential because it is the place where dust tends to accumulate most. Wageningen Agricultural University (the Netherlands) has conducted a study into the mite Darmatophagoides pteronyssimus. The study included testing in both private residences (living rooms and bedrooms) and schools (classrooms), and showed that smooth floor coverings have the lowest concentrations of dust. This is the primary reason the medical profession often recommends smooth floor coverings, such as Marmoleum, which can be kept dust-free more quickly and easily, preventing household mites from multiplying.
The Netherlands Asthma Foundation also recommends smooth floor coverings, such as linoleum and vinyl, because they make for simple, efficient cleaning.
Anti-Static Properties Static electricity causes electric charge to accumulate on people or objects. When discharged, this may give the well-known but unpleasant "electric shock". Static electricity is also, however, a very strong magnet to attract and accumulate dust. Unlike most other floor coverings, Marmoleum possess naturally occurring anti-static properties. Not only does this reduce the potential for electric shock, but it also makes the floor easier to clean in that dust and dirt will not easily adhere to the floor.
Studies conducted by VIBA (the Netherlands Association for Integrated Biological Architecture) and the American Research Institute Stephen Halpern further underscore the anti-static properties of linoleum.
In Finland, we are the only floor covering manufacturer allowed to use the logo stating: "In conjunction with the Allergy and Asthma Federation".
| Natural raw materials
Linoleum is produced from renewable materials: linseed oil, rosins, wood flour, jute and ecologically responsible pigments. The harvesting or extraction of these raw materials consumes relatively little energy.
| |
| Linseed oil, which is obtained by pressing the seeds of the flax plant, is linoleum’s most important raw material (and the origin of its name). Throughout the years, linseed oil has been used for many purposes, ranging from cooking to providing quick relief to people suffering from a cold. | | |
| | |
| Rosin, which is tapped from pine trees using a method that does not harm their growth, provides the binding agent for linoleum. Together with the linseed oil, rosin gives linoleum its unique combination of strength and flexibility. | | |
| | |
| Wood flour is used because it has the unique characteristic of being able to bind with the pigments. This gives our linoleum products their beautiful colours and ensures their long-term colour-fastness. | | |
| | |
| Cork flour is the ground bark of the cork oak. We source ours from plantations in Mediterranean countries. The bark is peeled every seven to ten years without damaging either the lifespan or the health of the tree. Cork flour is used as a raw material in Bulletin Board and Corklinoleum. | | |
| | |
| Limestone is found all over the world in enormous quantities. In its very finely ground form, it is an important raw material for linoleum. | | |
| | |
| The vibrant, beautiful colours of our linoleum are created by using ecologically responsible organic pigments. The pigments used in our products do not contain heavy metals (such as lead or cadmium) or other harmful substances, and do not pose a threat to the environment. | | |
| | |
| Jute, which is spun from the fibres of jute plants in India and Bangladesh, is the preferred backing of our products because of its natural origins. Not only is there an abundant, renewable supply of jute, but it also provides critical export opportunities for these developing economies. | | |
| | |
| As long as the sun shines and the rain falls, Forbo will be able to produce linoleum. | |
Manuals
Marmoleum Sheet & Tile Installation
|
|
| The finest floor covering made will not look good nor perform well if it is not installed properly. In the flooring industry, 97%-98% of all complaints are installation, subfloor or maintenance related. The first step to a successful installation is choosing the right floor covering for the particular application. No one flooring is right for every application. If you have any doubt as to the suitability of a product, check with the manufacturer. With today's technology, flooring products, subfloor preparation products, adhesives and installation techniques change at a rapid pace. It is the responsibility of the installer to assure that the products are installed in strict adherence to the manufacturer's recommendation. This installation manual is just one of the many technical support services provided by Forbo Linoleum. Do not install any floor covering product until you are fully educated and familiar with its installation procedures and that the subfloor and job conditions have been met.
