The Next Generation of Sustainable Insulation . . .
Naturally from Knauf.

Think of it as green, only browner

Knauf EcoBatt® Insulation doesn’t look like any insulation you’ve ever seen, but that’s because its natural brown color represents a level of sustainability we've never before achieved.

The color comes from ECOSE® Technology, a revolutionary, new sustainable binder born from five years of intensive research. Based on rapidly renewable bio-based materials rather than non-renewable petroleum-based chemicals commonly used in other insulation products, ECOSE Technology reduces binder embodied energy by up to 70%, and does not contain phenol, formaldehyde, acrylics or artificial colors used to make traditional fiberglass insulation.

EcoBatt Insulation combines sand, one of the world’s most abundant and renewable resources, post-consumer recycled bottle glass and ECOSE Technology to create the next generation of sustainable insulation…naturally from Knauf.

Legendary Handling Characteristics

While developing EcoBatt Insulation, maintaining Knauf’s legendary handling was mandatory. EcoBatt products deliver the same exceptional quality, handling and durability our customers have become accustomed to, with a higher level of sustainability.

EcoBatt products have superior consistency throughout the batt, from batt to batt and from package to package. They offer features installers really appreciate—quick recovery, gutsy, easy to cut, and less dusty. And EcoBatt Insulation has a friendlier feel, a pleasant natural scent and a distinctive natural installed look.

“Knauf batts have always been the best. But, EcoBatt Insulation is better than the best.”
– 30 year Professional Insulation Installer

Energy Energy is on everyone’s mind. Where to find it, and how to make more. But finding or creating more energy isn’t the answer. The answer is insulation. Using the energy we already have more efficiently today is the first step toward energy conservation to help ensure better lives for generations to come. Insulation and its Impact In residential and commercial buildings, energy efficiency through insulation is the simplest and most cost effective way to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.1 By reducing energy consumption, insulation cuts pollution from the utility infrastructure, slashing carbon dioxide emission by 780 million tons every year. This is the equivalent to the annual electricity use of over 90 million homes. Knauf Insulation’s goal is to provide products and services that conserve energy and preserve natural resources for a sustainable future. And EcoBatt® Insulation with ECOSE® Technology will help us achieve that. Insulation saves 12 times more energy the first year in use than it takes to manufacture it—and it continues to save that much each year from then on. In fact, if all existing and new homes in the U.S. were insulated to just the 2000 International Energy Conservation Code, the U.S. would save 800 trillion BTU’s each year—the equivalent of 75,000 supertankers of oil. 1 “A Cost Curve for Green House Gas Reduction,” The McKinsey Quarterly 2007, Number 1. A World Leader With nearly 5,000 employees in more than 50 countries, Knauf Insulation is the fastest growing and one of the largest insulation manufacturers in the world. We manufacture a wide range of insulation materials to meet the growing demands for energy efficiency and acoustic performance. Since our founding 30 years ago in Shelbyville, Indiana, we have grown to become an industry leader by creating products that make the world a better place today and for future generations. That growth has been driven by our commitment to sustainable products, operations and corporate responsibility. Our Commitment to Sustainability: Our mission: To provide products and services that conserve energy and preserve natural resources for a sustainable future. Our vision: We will be a leader in providing sustainable solutions for energy efficiency, productivity and comfort in the environments in which people live and work. Our Sustainability Initiative To meet the challenge to provide sustainable, innovative solutions that improve energy efficiency we continually strive for improvements in both manufacturing operations and product design and performance. In our operations, we continually look for ways to advance our glass formulations and increase the use of post-consumer recycled bottle glass in all our products. And to reclaim and reuse vented heat and to control emissions, we have invested millions of dollars in regenerative thermal oxidizers (RTO’s) and the best available control technology (BACT) for pollution control. RTOs installed at our Shasta Lake and Shelbyville plants have reduced the amount of energy it takes to cure our products, as well as reduced CO2 emissions from the curing ovens by up to 90%. Our goal is to have RTOs on all our plants by 2010. Our commitment to sustainability goes beyond our manufacturing floor. We have just dedicated a new 24,860 square foot Engineering and Development office building that is targeted to earn a New Construction Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED-NC) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. It will use 30% less energy than a conventional office building while accommodating 50 offices and house a 126-seat “Knauf University” classroom and training center. Our commitment also goes beyond our company. We have also provided an unrestricted research grant to Purdue University to develop HESTIA, the world’s first data-driven model to quantify, visualize, and analyze fossil fuel emissions down to the street level. Hestia is designed to educate companies and consumers on how they can help the environment by lessening their carbon footprints. Our insulation products have an inherent impact on energy consumption; they save hundreds of times more energy in use than required to make them, and all our products are made from renewable and abundant resources, such as recycled glass and sand. Through the development of revolutionary solutions like ECOSE Technology we continually focus our efforts on providing solutions that save energy and resources to positively affect the lives of people today and tomorrow. Our Guiding Principles As a family-owned company, we’re proud of the Knauf name and what it stands for. Customers worldwide have put their trust in the quality, consistency and performance or our products and our business values. So, everyone who does business with us recognizes the importance that, in our quest to become more sustainable, there are certain principles that we will not compromise: • The quality, consistency, and performance characteristics for which our products are known. • Our ability to apply any technological advances across all product lines. • The safe and efficient manufacture of our products. • Our goal of reducing emissions from plant operations. • Our commitment to cost-effectively produce our products. It is with this mission and these guiding principles that we are proud to introduce EcoBatt Insulation with ECOSE Technology. Introducing ECOSE Technology ECOSE® Technology is a revolutionary, more sustainable patented binder technology born from five years of intensive research and development. It is based on rapidly renewable bio-based materials rather than non-renewable petroleum-based chemicals commonly used in traditional fiberglass insulation products. ECOSE® Technology converts natural, rapidly renewable organic materials into an inert polymer for superior environmental sustainability. And it does not contain phenol, formaldehyde, acrylics or artificial colors used to make traditional fiberglass insulation. By reducing the binder embodied energy up to 70% compared to traditional fiberglass insulation binder, ECOSE Technology reduces the Global Warming Potential and Ecobatt® Insulation embodied energy by an anticipated 4%. Industry-Leading Sustainability Although traditional Knauf products are very sustainable, products with ECOSE Technology are even better. ECOSE Technology replaced the traditional binder, making EcoBatt Insulation products even more sustainable. They deliver the same exceptional quality, handling characteristics and performance that Knauf products are known for—while creating a new industry benchmark for environmental responsibility and sustainability. ECOSE Technology is plant and process friendly, too. No changes to Knauf’s proven manufacturing process were required to convert operations to the new technology. Eliminating the non-renewable petroleum-based chemicals found in traditional insulation binders also reduces cost instability associated with those chemicals. And, ECOSE Technology eliminates phenol and formaldehyde from the manufacturing process, which in turn eliminates their plant emissions.
