Think of the marketplace as an opportunity for change. Whenever you support green businesses or practices, every purchase you make gives that product or service more value in the economy, making it more cost-effective to provide or produce. Think about the fact that for every product or service you buy, there is a green alternative. There are natural food stores that sell organic produce grown without toxic chemicals; home improvement stores that stock sustainably harvested—rather than old-growth wood; and banks that invest in underserved populations in the local community. If all American families shifted even ten percent of their purchases to green products and services, more than $170 billion would be put to work growing the green economy. Combine this with reducing, reusing, and recycling, and we can steer our economy on a course that is environmentally and socially responsible. |
